Tampa, FL - When it comes to social networking websites, it's not just what you don't put on your page. It's what you do.
Facebook can be a great tool for job seekers, said consultant Joan Brannick, Ph.D., SPHR.
10 Connects connected Brannick with job seeker Melissa Anderson, 23. About two weeks ago, Anderson parted ways with her company of seven years, and since then, she's been combing the web for jobs.
"You name it, I've been to every website pretty much," she said. And although she had combed through multiple job searching sites, Anderson hadn't used her social networking sites Facebook or MySpace to try to find a job.
"Facebook is a great tool that can help you find a job,' Brannick said. Brannick is a consultant who critiques Facebook pages and helps people use them to find a job.
First off, make a list of the things you're good at. Then look at your Facebook page. Does it reflect that?
Like many Facebook pages, Anderson's contained pictures and friendly banter with friends. While none of the pictures were risqué, Brannick suggested Anderson add some industry-related content.
"For example, given your experiences on a previous job... and your years of work experience," Brannick said, "write an article that's kind of your take on the challenges."
Also, upload your resume to your Facebook page and post industry-related links.
Anderson is interested in a sports marketing job, so she posted a link to the Sports Marketing Network.
And don't forget the most obvious way to get help finding a job on Facebook. Change your status update to let your friends know you're looking for a job!
If you only use Facebook for social purposes and don't want to change, Brannick suggests creating a profile on another network such as LinkedIn.com. That way, you can plan out your page and put some thought into it.
